Residential Roofing for Vicksburg Homes

The median Vicksburg house was finished in 1967, and 73 percent of the city's housing predates 1980. Nearly one home in seven dates to 1939 or earlier.

The census records no housing units at all built since 2020, which tells you what kind of market this is. Almost nothing here is new construction. Roofing work in Vicksburg is replacement work on standing houses, and the question on most of them is not whether the roof has been done before but how many times and how well.

We install Owens Corning, Tamko, Eagle and DECRA. Which one goes on depends on the deck, the pitch and the exposure, and on whether the house sits where the material is reviewable.

We set expectations up front and we do not over-promise. You approve every dollar before it becomes a bill.

What Comes Off a House This Old

On a house from the 1950s or 60s that has been re-roofed more than once, the code question is live rather than academic. The 2018 residential code Vicksburg enforces does allow a recover over one sound existing layer where the manufacturer's instructions permit it. It does not allow a third. Tear-off is mandatory where the roof already carries two or more applications, where the existing roof is water-soaked or deteriorated past serving as a base, or where the covering is slate, clay, cement or asbestos-cement tile.

We tear off to the bare deck as our own standard regardless, because that is the only way to find soft sheathing instead of burying it. Where the inspection found bad decking, it is priced in the quote. If there is more underneath than anyone could see from above, we stop and talk to you before spending your money.

On pre-war stock the surprises are usually at the transitions rather than in the field: chimney flashing patched with sealant, a valley shingled over rather than lined, a vent reused past its life.

Where the Water Goes Is the Whole Job Here

In most cities this is a gutter conversation. In Vicksburg it is a soil-mechanics conversation, and the source is the Corps of Engineers rather than us.

Loess drains well and stands up well while it is dry. Wet it and it consolidates and loses strength. The documented failure mode in this soil is undercutting by erosion at the foot of a bank or saturation by ponding, and the published instruction is to keep water away from the base of the cut bank with berms or offset ditches. Investigators found that arched slope failures were seldom noted where drainage ran away from the base of the slope.

A downspout is a concentrated water source. On a lot with any slope behind or below it, putting a roof's worth of rain into one spot at the top of a bank is the exact input that soil does not tolerate. So on a Vicksburg roof we look at gutter capacity, downspout runs and where the discharge actually lands, and we extend it away from slopes.

We will not quote you a setback distance in feet, because no published source gives one for this city and inventing a number would be worse than useless.

Ventilation in a House That Predates the Rules

Attic ventilation requirements have moved on a long way since 1967, and a lot of Vicksburg attics were never brought up to them. An under-ventilated attic in this climate cooks the shingle from the back face, curls the edges, takes years off the roof and voids most manufacturer warranties while it does it.

We measure intake and exhaust rather than eyeballing them. Where the balance is wrong, correcting it sits in the quote where the inspection found it, because a new roof over a ventilation problem only resets the clock on the same failure.

FAQ

Common questions

How old is the typical Vicksburg house?

The median was built in 1967 and 73 percent of the stock predates 1980, with nearly one in seven dating to 1939 or earlier. Bear in mind that is the age of the structure, not the roof.

Can you go over my existing shingles?

Sometimes legally, but we do not. The 2018 code allows a recover over one sound layer, never over two, and never over a water-soaked deck or slate, clay, cement or asbestos-cement tile. We tear off to the deck as standard.

Do you handle gutters and drainage?

Yes, and in Vicksburg it is part of the roof conversation rather than an add-on. This soil loses strength when it gets wet, and a downspout is a concentrated water source at the top of a slope.

Do you replace bad decking?

When we find it, yes. It is priced in the quote where the inspection found it, and anything beyond that gets discussed with you before we spend your money.
