Roof Repair in Vicksburg, MS

Done properly a repair protects everything around it. Done carelessly it moves the leak somewhere harder to find. We trace water back to where it actually entered rather than sealing the nearest suspicious spot.

On stock with a median build year of 1967, the leak is usually at a seam between two previous roofers' decisions rather than in the field of the shingle.

Most of our work still comes from word of mouth. We set expectations up front, we do not over-promise, and nothing reaches your bill that you did not approve first.

Half of Vicksburg’s Storms Are Filed Under Somewhere Else

If you have tried to look up whether a storm hit your address, this is why it went badly.

Since 2008 the National Weather Service has recorded real damage coordinates for this county, but the place label did not follow. Close to half the storm reports whose coordinates fall inside the Vicksburg city limits are filed under names like Stout, Beechwood, Waltersville or Kings, which are point locations rather than municipalities. Search the database for Vicksburg and you find roughly half of what actually happened here.

Before 2008 it runs the other way: reports were pinned to a single city centroid, so two coordinate pairs account for dozens of records between them. Those coordinates are a label, not a location.

We read the narratives rather than the tags when we are working out what hit a house and when. That matters for an insurance conversation, because the date of loss has to be right.

The Storms That Named Vicksburg Streets

On the last day of 2010 a tornado touched down at Fisher Ferry and Halls Ferry Roads and tracked northeast, blowing shingles off several roofs and part of a roof off a hangar. In March 2012 another peeled part of a metal roof off a building near the Corps station, then ran along Porters Chapel Road into the Lakewood subdivision.

In April 2019 two tornadoes crossed the city within the same event. One began near the Walmart off Iowa Boulevard and ran along Pemberton Square Boulevard. The other began at Bowmar Avenue and Jeanette Street, took the roof completely off a brick home and caved in the front of the house, then moved east toward Halls Ferry Road.

In March 2016 an event took siding off and damaged roofs along Highway 61 south. Across the county the record since 1996 holds 345 thunderstorm wind reports, with the strongest estimated at 100 miles an hour, and 48 tornado records, none stronger than EF2.

After a Long Rain, Look Down the Slope Too

Vicksburg gets a second kind of repair call that other cities do not, and it follows sustained rain rather than wind.

The record is specific. A mudslide blocked Mission 66 in January 2013. Part of Villanova Road closed in April 2014. North Washington Street lost a lane to a slide in April 2016 and took a dirt slide in April 2018. Another came down near Washington Street in January 2020, and Army Navy Drive in April 2024. In the winter of 2020, after more than 25 inches of rain in under 50 days, a 60-yard section of road in the national cemetery was compromised when the loess slumped to a lower terrace.

If your roof drainage has been dumping at one point for years and the ground below it has started to move, that is a roof problem with a soil symptom. We look at both. Where the answer is grading and discharge rather than roofing, that is the cheaper conversation and you should have it.

Hail, Wind, and Repair or Replace

Hail rarely punches a hole. It bruises the mat under the granules, which shortens the life of the shingle without leaking this year. Wind lifts and creases shingles without removing them. Warren County has logged 61 hail reports at an inch or larger and 23 at golf ball size or bigger, with the largest on record at 4 inches in March 2013.

When the roof still has real life in it and the damage is contained, we repair it and tell you honestly how long you have. When it is finished, patching only postpones the same conversation by a season, and we will say so.

If a storm caused it, decide between repair and claim before filing anything: see storm damage and insurance claims. On a covered claim, you pay your deductible. That is it.

FAQ

Common questions

I cannot find a storm report for my address. Why?

Because close to half the reports that physically happened inside the city are filed under point-location names like Stout, Beechwood or Waltersville rather than Vicksburg. We read the narratives rather than the tags, which matters when a claim needs the right date of loss.

The ground below my house is moving. Is that a roof problem?

It can be. Loess loses strength when it gets wet, and roof water discharged at one point on a slope is a concentrated source. We look at the roof and at where its water lands before deciding which one you actually have.

My roof looks fine from the ground. Could hail have damaged it?

Yes, and that is the normal case. Hail bruises the mat under the granules and wind creases shingles without removing them. The county record holds 23 hail reports at golf ball size or larger since 1996.

How fast can you get to a leak in Vicksburg?

Active leaks get priority, though Vicksburg is our longest drive at about 45 minutes. Ring the office and we will tell you straight where the schedule stands rather than promise a day we cannot keep.
